Some Quick Reasons to Toss Your TV for God (for Good)!
Some Quick Reasons to Toss Your TV for God (for Good)!
The most amazing invention of man has turned out to be the single, most destructive device that is responsible for completely changing the culture and habits of the world. Think of the impact that a few unsaved, mostly perverted writers have had upon the thinking of people, as they sit in front of the television and ask it to teach them. Man has divided the time on television and called it “programs,” and this is exactly what the television has done. It has programmed the world to think as it thinks. Hour after hour is spent in front of this box so much that it has blinded Christians, who have become hardened to the sin that they see displayed upon this set through the repetition of seeing and hearing its philosophy, without even knowing it. This short teaching about the television is written only from the basis of God’s thinking upon the subject. It does not contain any opinions from psychologists, doctors, educators, etc. (though much has been written by these about the dangers of the television). Everything that we need regarding our conduct in this life is already written in the Word of God.
Before we begin, I must say that I love to watch television. It is very entertaining and fun. I love to laugh and relax. I love to hear the information that the news brings me. I love to get all wrapped up in the movies and be entertained! I love to watch the gunfights, feel the suspense, and figure out the end of the mystery. I’m not going to lie and say that watching television is not fun. I also must tell you that I have not had one in my home nor watched one for 14 years! I also must tell you that I have ten children that all live with me and my wife. They do not watch television either! How can you live without a television???? We hear this question all the time. My answer is this: I live without a television the same way everyone lived without a television before televisions came out. We have family time; we read books; we talk; we pray; we hug; we kiss; we play instruments; we learn other languages; we strive to think as Jesus would, without anyone else programming us to think as they do!!
This is the first reason and the most important reason to Toss Your TV for God (Good)! The philosophy on the television is backed up by Satan himself. What is the name of the devil? Read Ephesians 2:2,3, which says, “Wherein in time past ye walked (conducted our lives) according to the course (way) of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air (taught to us in front of the television), the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience (the unsaved love the television and its programming): Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh (before we knew the truth), fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind (where all sin begins); and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.” Satan has control of the “air waves” as we hear radio and television “preachers” not proclaiming the truth from the Word of God. We see the “ministers of Satan,” also known as screen writers, directors, actors, etc., preaching their philosophy that honors their father (the devil), and we see Christians with eyes glued to the box being “programmed” against the teaching of the Bible. God has warned us that we once thought as the world thought, but now we have become new creatures in Christ, and we are to think as He thinks in holiness and righteousness.
Christians of today wouldn’t know true godliness, if it hit them in the face! They mock righteousness and holiness as “too holy” and “holier than thou.” They preach “balance” with the world and discourage Christians from becoming “too heavenly minded.” Satan loves this teaching! He’s the one who wrote that sermon! Most Christians know more about the television than they do about their Bibles. Most Christians know the stats of their favorite sports team, but they don’t know what the Bible teaches regarding their roles. They know the names and information about movies stars, but can’t recite the books of the Bible, the names of the disciples, the names of the prophets of God, or the main teachings from God’s Word and where they can be found. After, during, and before church they discuss sports, movies, and television, because they love it! Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also! Most preachers spend more time watching sports, movies, and television than they do reading their Bibles and praying. They mock those who do not have a television as “over righteous hermits” in order to cover up their own lack of devotion to God.
The philosophy of the television is one-sided – from the world. Yet, we are encouraged from the Word of God not to learn the philosophy of the world. Jeremiah 10:2 tells us, “Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen.” Here is one quick question (answer it truthfully): What “way” does the television teach? If you said the way of the heathen, you win!!! Proverbs 19:27 commands us, “Cease, my son, to hear the instruction that causeth to err from the words of knowledge.” This is a command that applies to the television and its philosophy. Cease to hear this ungodly philosophy.
What philosophy am I talking about? The philosophy or way of life of the worldly family that does not do anything to glorify God is promoted as if it is “right.” Here is a quick list:
Ephesians 5:31 teaches us about marriage, “For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.” On television very few are married, but many live together. Does this glorify God?
Ephesians 5:23 tells us about the authority structure of the home, “For the husband is the head of the wife.” On television, the father is not there, or is the object of the jokes. He’s usually stupid, unknowledgeable, hen-pecked, or effeminate.
Proverbs 14:9 teaches us, “Fools make a mock at sin: but among the righteous there is favour.” Television teaches us that sin is funny. It mocks righteousness and belittles holiness, even on the news with their slanted opinions.
Colossians 3:20 tells children, “Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord.” Television teaches children to talk back, sneak behind their parents back, do their own thing, etc. That’s why your kid has a bad attitude!
Titus 2:3-5 tells the woman’s role, “The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness… That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.” Television teaches us that women have equal rights with men; that they are their own boss; that they don’t even need a husband; that children are a hindrance to their careers; that they have the choice to murder their children (abortion); and that they can act, live, and conduct their lives with no fear of God and no responsibility to their God-given roles. Christian women have adapted this thinking and have patterned their lives after these “actors.” Is this why there’s so much divorce among Christians????
I John 2:15 ,16, teaches, “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.” Television promotes pleasure, fast cars, loose women, large houses, prosperity, worldly comforts, immoral living, etc. It promotes the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life that will cast the world into hell and keep them from loving the Lord with all of their hearts. Christians’ hearts become crowded out with the “lusts of other things” and the “deceitfulness of riches” that choke them as they are “programmed.”
James 4:4 talks about Christians who are watching the television, “Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.” Television teaches us that “God” wants us to be prosperous. It teaches us that God’s blessings are temporal things like houses, cars, money, etc. It teaches us that the world is a wonderful place!
John 15:19 explains that we have been chosen out of the world, “If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.” Television makes the viewer part of the world as it teaches conformity and grieves the Holy Spirit of God that is within the Christian. However, we are not of this world, and if one feels at home watching anti-Biblical philosophy and teaching, there is a heart problem.
Colossians 3:16 teaches us what we are to sing, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” Is this the teaching in the music that you listen to on the television?? Does the music and its teachings cause you to sing with grace in your hearts to the Lord???
II Corinthians 10:5 teaches us how to think, “Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.” Does the teaching of the television exalt itself against the knowledge of God?? Shouldn’t you cast down those thoughts and images that are displayed before your eyes??
I Corinthians 2:4-6 explains the only type of wisdom that we should have, “And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God. Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought.” Does the television stand in the wisdom of God or in the power of the Holy Spirit of God or in the wisdom of man that is temporal and will come to nothing???!!!
Luke 14:26 tells us how to be a disciple of Christ, “If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.” Does the television cause you to become a better disciple of the Lord?? Does it cause you to want to deny yourself, take up your cross, and follow the Lord???
Luke 16:13 states that you cannot serve righteousness and unrighteousness, “No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.” How can you serve the Lord and watch the television that teaches everything exactly the opposite of what God has commanded you? You can’t serve the Lord and watch the devil’s programming for long without the wicked philosophy rubbing off. Can you imagine how fast all the right teaching is erased from the mind of your young child as you put them in front of the television??
I Thessalonians 5:17 commands, “Pray without ceasing.” Do you have a good prayer time in front of the television???
Colossians 2:8 commands us, “Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.” Does the television spoil your thinking by giving you wrong philosophy and vain deceit? Does it teach you and your family the tradition of men and the rudiments (principles) of the world? How does its philosophy help you to serve the Lord??
